Congratulations to Matt Kleopfer, IMS and IHS Band Director, on being selected as a Horizon Award Winner. The Kansas Horizon Award program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. The award program honors exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.
The Horizon Award program is a regional competition. The regions correspond to the state’s four U.S. congressional districts. The Kansas State Department of Education appoints regional selection committees responsible for reviewing the nomination forms and selecting four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers per region for a total of 32 teachers.
Kleopfer will now join the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network, a network of educators from around the state who have been formally recognized for exemplary performance. Members of KEEN have an opportunity to network with other outstanding educators and participate in a number of professional development programs throughout the year.
The 2014 Kansas Horizon Award recipients will be recognized at a special luncheon during the Kansas Exemplary Educator Network State Education Conference at the end of February.
Matt was contacted by Dr. Dianne DeBacker, Commissioner of Education, on January 9th. The call was made directly to his classroom so that his students could be in on the surprise announcement.
